- Visitors to Santiago during winter (between May and September) should exercise caution. The city is known for having high levels of air pollution, which becomes worse during the winter. - Travellers to Chile should take note of certain dates in the national calendar: nationwide demonstrations take place on 1 May, 29 March and 11 September. Santiago is usually the focus of these protests. - Street crime is common, especially in tourist hotspots. - Pay attention to when and where you are travelling. Chile is a long country – stretching from the tropics almost to Antarctica. The weather in its different regions can vary widely. Whilst it may be warm and sunny up north, it can be freezing in the south.
