Essence of London
A full-day tour that encompasses the most classic of London’s sights
London may not have been built in a day, but it can be seen in one, thanks to Tristar Worldwide’s Essence of London tour. You will enjoy London’s most iconic sights, sounds and experiences, and at an unhurried pace, allowing you plenty of time to revel in the city’s inimitable character.
It all begins at 9.00 a.m., when your personal driver-guide will meet you in the lobby of your hotel. At this point, you can discuss any changes you might like to make to your tour itinerary. The schedule we suggest is flexible and open to amendment, in order to suit your individual requirements. You could alter the itinerary a few days before, or even an hour into the excursion – the choice is entirely yours.
Delve into the Gothic splendour of Westminster Abbey with your own private, authorised tour. Discover the tombs of England’s kings and queens gone by, not to mention the numerous renowned men and women who repose here (far too many to name!). With architecture dating back to the 13th century, it is no wonder that Westminster Abbey has proved such a glorious setting for a number of royal coronations and weddings, both past and present. This awe-inspiring building is one of England’s treasures, and a must-see for any visitor to London.
Alternatively, take a private tour of one of London’s most iconic buildings – St. Paul’s Cathedral. Situated on Ludgate Hill – the highest point in London - St. Paul’s has dominated the city skyline for over three hundred years. Its breathtaking architecture includes one of the finest domes in the world, and its hallowed walls have seen some very important events in Britain’s history, such as the funeral of Sir Winston Churchill and wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana. Extensive rejuvenation work – recently completed – now sees St. Paul’s restored to its finest. For those feeling spry enough, the cathedral’s superb dome can be climbed (528 steps!) to access a splendid view of London.
The spirit of London cannot be captured by its monuments alone; a taste of the city is essential for a full experience. Your tour will reach the halfway point with a stop for a spot of lunch in a traditional London setting. Once again, this can be arranged according to your preference. Perhaps you heard about a specific restaurant in London that you must try. Maybe you would rather go the traditional workingman’s way and indulge in some hearty pub grub – fish and chips or pie and mash. If you have a specific place in mind, we can make your reservations. Simply let us know your preferences and dietary requirements during the booking process.
Your tour will resume with a guided exploration of the delights – and horrors – that the Tower of London has to offer. This official royal palace, fortress and former state prison is well known for its macabre history, which often overshadows the other roles it has played in its long life. Your knowledgeable tour guide can take you through the Tower of London’s past, and explain its evocative legends, such as the ravens of the tower, the Beefeaters and, of course, the ghosts that haunt its walls. In all the excitement, do not forget the opportunity to view the splendour of England’s Crown Jewels!
The Essence of London tour will naturally include a majority of the city’s other famous sites, such as Buckingham Palace with the Changing of the Guard (subject to schedules), Big Ben, the Parliament Houses, Trafalgar Square, Tower Bridge, the London Eye, Covent Garden, Kensington Palace, the HMS Belfast anchored in Southwark and Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre. The city’s Royal Parks – including Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens, and Regent’s Park can also be explored, in addition to numerous hidden streets and squares, which you will not see on a standard city tour. After all, if you truly want to experience the Essence of London, you may have to venture off the beaten track.
